Returning to the Dolphin Inn we leave the car and follow signs for the Ribble Way which starts here and follows the River Ribble through Preston and right up to its source in the Yorkshire Dales.

We have a better day today and not very far to go, as we have to relocate to Lancaster this afternoon – Why? Well, because what seems like a hundred years ago (2016), I actually walked from Preston to Lytham St.Annes to join a few dots and had previously walked in stages up to Fleetwood …………but never mind, it will all come clear in the next post – maybe.
The sweep of Longton and Hutton Marshes stretch out as far as the eye can see……

Eventually we reach the river and turn right to follow the south bank towards Preston. One interesting fact for you – the Cuerdale Hoard, the largest Viking silver hoard ever found outside Russia, was discovered in 1840 on the southern bank of the river, at Cuerdale near Preston.

We are now getting closer to Preston, the golf course appears on our right and there is a busy concrete road bridge to walk under. But before we are thrown into the bustle of the city it is a lovely surprise to find ourselves in an area of parkland.

Carved wooden sculptures follow our progress……………..

A last look at the river and we’re off to catch a bus back to our car.

Distance: 5 miles
That was an interesting fact about the Viking silver hoard. Glad you found the river in Preston. If you had gone on a little bit further you would have found the lovely Avenhham and Miller Parks by the river, part of the Guild wheel(cycle path).xx
